Review: Master Your Emotions (part 1) – When you give attention to your emotions

The way I would like to review this book is to choose some specific quotes that spoke to me and talk about them. Because there are many lines that I really liked, I’ve decided to make more than just one review post. If you just want a general summary, I’m sure you can find many out there.

You can be hated by the entire world an still have a job, a roof and plenty of food on the table, yet your brain remains programmed to perceive rejection as a threat to your survival.

The point is, when you give thoughts room to exist, they spread and become major points of focus.

I always have this thought whenever I’m feeling down. Why am I sad when I have everything I need to survive? When I keep replaying this in my head, my mind starts to think about everything that’s wrong with my life and I end up being sad longer than I should’ve.

This book focuses a lot on if you give your emotions attention, they’ll have the power to control your life if that makes sense. In other words, if you feel an emotion and you don’t pay much attention to it, then it won’t exist or it won’t affect you in any way. However, if you’re sad and you give that emotion attention, then it will strongly affect you.

I remember during my last year of university, I was working 50 hours a week while taking a full course load. My friends and family asked me if I was stressed and tired, and I had to think twice because I didn’t even realize I was feeling those two emotions until I took the time to think about them. Oh yeah, I am exhausted and stressed, but how am I able to function? The answer is: that I was able to survive that crazy schedule because I didn’t spend time thinking about how much work I had to do. I didn’t think about how tired or stressed I was, I just did what I had to do.

Now I know that it is true, when you don’t pay attention to your emotions, they don’t exist and you’re able to function normally doing the things that you have or want to do.
